Guest Post With Racquel!

Hi everyone!

I’m so excited to be taking over the Fire and Ice book review site. It may also be because
my book ‘Last Ashes’ is released to you, the fabulous readers, today! So I’m going to give
you guys a little info on the books series so far. Information that – so far – hasn’t been said
anywhere else!

The Fire of the Soul series has been very dear to me since I started writing it in 2011. I
released the first book in January 2013. It was the first complete book I had ever written
as I had started a lot of books before then but never finished them. I still have no clue as to
why this was the first book that I finished but I just knew that I had to finish writing it. Let’s
just say it’s the fact that I was invested in the story and in the characters that I had created.
I knew that there was so much more to be written, that their story wasn’t finished in ‘The
Fire Within’. It was that feeling of more that I knew I had to write a second book and so
I did. Now that I have finished ‘Last Ashes’ I can feel the erratic beating of my heart and
it’s pumping with all the speed of a bullet train now that I’ve pressed the release button! It
feels as if I’ve been staring at a bomb’s timer ticking away and I can only wonder, what will
happen now that it’s gone off?

I guess you’re all wondering what exactly is so good about it? Well I can probably rattle off
a hundred things that I feel are noteworthy and exciting about ‘Last Ashes’ but I’ll give you
guys seven reasons why it’s so exciting. (Note: These may be spoil-ery. Read with caution!)
01. Anna kick’s ass! She is a fighter through and through and no matter what Christian does
in this book she fights back.

02. Werewolves and Phantoms! ‘The Fire Within’ book was mainly about the Vampires and
Skinwalkers but at the end of ‘The Fire Within’ I teased about the Werewolves and Phantoms
that the Skinwalkers teamed up with. Well in ‘Last Ashes’ we get to see those characters in
action.

03. The Dead don’t stay dead! Nope not at all and those who we thought were dead in ‘The
Fire Within’ may come back in ‘Last Ashes’!
04. Christian!!!!! We get a lot of action with the hated villain and there’s a few moments
where we see a side to him that isn’t completely wicked.
05. Rebels! IF you thought I would let Christian take over the Underworld without
consequences, all I can say is guess again.
06. Immortals. There’s a lot more than we thought there were and there will be even more
in ‘The Eternal Flame’.

07. Manea! Yes, you read that right. The goddess of the Underworld who was only teased
in ‘The Fire Within’ makes an appearance in ‘Last Ashes’.
Having finished the second book I’ve already got a ton of ideas for the final book which
will be named ‘The Eternal Flame’. Let’s just say that a lot of characters that were teased,
mentioned or were slightly involved in the first and second book will be making an
appearance for the third book. If you thought the Underworld was in chaos in ‘Last Ashes’,
it’s nothing compared to what will happen in ‘The Eternal Flame’.

So in celebration of the second book’s release I’ve got three things for all of you lovely and
wonderful readers who have come this far. The first is an exclusive giveaway for anyone who
readers/follows this blog. You can enter the giveaway by completing the rafflecopter below,
If you are picked in the giveaway below you will receive an ebook copy of ‘The Fire Within’
and ‘Last Ashes’ so you can read the complete series (so far)! The second is an excerpt of the
first chapter from ‘Last Ashes’ which you can download by clicking on the link to my blog
below. And thirdly I’m hosting a giveaway on my facebook page today so if you jump over
there you will have more chances to win the ebooks, paperbacks of the books and swag!

Review: Carnival by K.B. Nelson

Carnival by K.B. Nelson

Synopsis
Expected publication: July 7, 2014

Charlie should be packing her bags for college, but the life ahead of her isn’t one she’s certain she
wants. Maybe that’s what led her to sleep with a perfect stranger at the county fair. Finding out he
was a carnie was like winning the bonus round of the world’s worst game.
Blue grew up in the carnival, never staying anywhere long enough to call home. He never thought
of himself as the type to seduce a local, let alone fall in love with one, but his impulsiveness got the
better of him this time. He should go where the carnival takes him, but for the first time he’s not sure
if he wants to follow.
When he makes the decision to stick around, Charlie eagerly follows him down the rabbit hole; into a
world with no regard for consequences or regret. Most of all, he shows her that home isn’t a place, it’s
a feeling they can create and share. For a price. Because the higher the roller coaster goes, the faster
it all comes crashing down

Review by Lesley

Charlie is supposed to be leaving for college with her best friend, but she's still dealing with the
aftershocks of her parent's divorce and isn't sure what she wants for her future. All she knows is she
doesn't want to go to college right now and that she doesn't want to get back together with her long
time boyfriend Dylan.
On a whim, she takes a solo adventure to the local county fair, where she meets a boy with the most
beautiful eyes she's ever seen. Everything about him is exciting and intriguing, even his name, Blue.
She realizes that he's a carnie, a gypsy, someone that will probably never settle down, yet she can't help
her attraction to him and does something completely against her standard behavior and sleeps with
him.
Blue has traveled with his dad and the carnival for several years but finds himself wanting to stick
around for the first time ever if it means being with Charlie. His cousin and uncle live in town and he
decides to stay with them for awhile instead of following the carnival. And what a small world because
Blue's cousin is the best friend of Dylan.
The turmoil that Charlie and Blue face as their relationship progresses is just like a wild carnival ride.
The question is will their relationship be strong enough to ride out the highs and lows or will it spin out
of their control.
KB Nelson did a great job in writing this book. I felt like I really got to know Blue and Charlie because of
the chapter's alternating from one's point of view to the other and despite their unusual meeting and
resulting feelings for each other, I really was rooting for them. I wasn't a huge fan of the heavy drinking
and drug use that was prevalent throughout most of the book, but I do recognize that it probably would
have been a whole other book had it not been a part of their story. There were definitely a few twists
that I was not expecting so it made for a very interesting book and I could not put the book down,
because I just had to keep going to see what was going to happen next.
I received a complimentary ARC of Carnival in exchange for an honest review.

This is an ARC. Buy links will be added on July 7th.

The Dare by Rachel Van Dyken Trailer Reveal

Synopsis

Boring Beth Lynn has always lived up to her nickname… until she wakes up in a hotel bed next to a sexy as sin state senator she re-connected with at a wedding the previous night.

The biggest problem? She can't seem to remember anything about the night before except for crying into a box of cookies, and she’s pretty sure Grandma Nadine slipped something in her drink. And what should have been a one night stand turns into a six day adventure when Grandma whisks them off to Hawaii to save them from the ensuing media firestorm.

Jace isn't looking for commitment — he believes he made that clear when he left the wedding with Beth. Then again, he can't remember much of anything other than the way her skin felt beneath his hands. Now he's stuck with her at some lame couple’s retreat and trying his hardest to fight the attraction only a woman like Beth could invoke.

He doesn’t think it can get any worse.

But one spider attack… A donkey ride from hell… And an unfortunate episode with Viagra tea — and there’s one thing Jace knows for sure: He should never have agreed to Grandma Nadine’s suggestion in the first place.
Because if this isn’t paradise, and it isn’t a vacation — that only leaves one option.

Survival.

But to make it through alive… they might lose their hearts in the process.

Cover Reveal: Street Food and Love

Street Food and Love  by H.A. Enri
Publication date: Summer 2014
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

Synopsis

Sole Eaby, seventeen, has a few complaints he’d like to lodge against life, the main one being that his dad, Cedro, has recently quit his job and withdrawn his entire life savings, which included Sole’s college fund. Why? To launch a food truck business he knows nothing about.

To cope, Sole uses his knifelike wit to moonlight as a stand-up comedian, and so far, it’s paying off. He’s not only replenishing his college treasury, he’s making people laugh; but it’s one person in particular he performs for. Her name is Ava. When the fated bond of humor joins the two, and they begin a sort of quasi-romance, things begin to seem somewhat bearable. Of course, that’s when an ill-timed event decides to put another spin on things. Just when Sole is ready to move on with his own life and disconnect himself from his father and the family business, he suddenly finds himself in charge of the food truck he desperately loathes. Here is where Sole must realize that the answers to love and life are not to be found apart but, rather, are more like a savory recipe: only by combining the ingredients will the wonderful flavors reveal themselves. When comedy isn’t enough, the future seems ever bleak, and a fledgling love has barely had a chance to bloom, where will Sole turn?

Author Spotlight & Interview With Elizabeth Hein

OverLook
Elizabeth Hein

Synopsis

Kitty Haskell has everything - a perfect house in the perfect neighborhood, a handsome husband, charming children, and a nasty case of gonorrhea. Rather than dealing with her cheating husband, Kitty worries the exclusive clique of Overlook moms will find out. Unfortunately, The Lookers seem to already know everything, about everyone.

Set against the backdrop of the bicentennial, this snarky novel peeks behind the custom curtains and pristine lawns to expose the grubby underbelly of suburbia to ask - How far will a woman go to protect what she loves?

Interview

If you could only read one book for the rest of your life what would you read?
Wow, one book? That is a toughie. I guess I would have to say The Bible because it would fulfill my need for guidance in what I would have to assume would be a difficult time, as well as being a volume full of inspiring stories that bring something new with each reading.

If you could rewrite one part of your book, what would you change?

If I were to rewrite Overlook, I would add more interactions between Kitty and her children. I came to like Becky and Bobby and imagined plot lines involving them.

Have you ever thought about doing a spinoff series?

Absolutely. Overlook ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, so I think it needs a sequel. I have a preliminary draft of Escape Plan (working title) in the works about the months after Overlook ends. I also have some ideas for some new characters that move into the neighborhood and shake things up a bit.

What was your favorite book as a child?

I read Anne of Green Gables at least ten times when I was younger. I was a bit a smarty pants as a girl, so Anne was definitely a kindred spirit. I could see myself getting into trouble the way she did and trying to make things better.

What was the first book you remember reading as a child?

I learned to read when my family was living overseas. We knew we could be moving at any time, so we didn’t accumulate much “stuff.” We more than made up for that when we returned to the States and collected piles of books and toys. One of the few books we had in Spain was The Aristocats. It came with the album of the Disney movie (do any of you when kids listened to recordings of movie instead of DVDs?). Interestingly, I still enjoy listening to books. I am an avid audio book fan.

Where do you get some of your ideas?

I write about ordinary people at extraordinary times in their lives. My stories are inspired by the people I see every day – a woman at the bank, the women in the PTA, a person I meet in a hospital waiting room. I tend to see someone and make up elaborate stories about their lives.

If your book could be made into a movie, who would play what role?

I picture Julianne Moore playing Kitty. She could portray the uptight mom with a dark side without being over the top. Kristin Chenoweth would play Stacia, the other main character. Not only is she teeny tiny, she could pull off the role of a controlling Southern belle with humor. And, as long as I’m dreaming, I would cast Helen Hunt as Kitty’s wine swilling sister and Simon Baker as Kitty’s charmingly despicable husband.

Can your books be read as a stand alone?

You could definitely read Overlook as a stand-alone. The ending leaves an opening for a second book, but it is also a distinct end point to the story. The main character of Kitty completes an arc from weak, proper wife to bold woman of action. You may not agree with her actions, but she definitely is a woman of action.

If you could step into a book world, what book would it be?

That is a tricky question. There are so many book worlds I would like to visit. If I were to choose just one, I would have to say Tolkien’s Middle Earth because it truly is a whole different world.

If you could hang out with another author that you have never met, who would it be?

There are so many authors I would like to hang out with. The first that comes to mind though is Mary Doria Russell. Each of her books is different from the others, yet wonderful. Also, I follow her on Facebook and she seems like she would be a fun gal to know.

About Elizabeth Hein

Elizabeth Hein is a mother, author, and cancer survivor. She grew up in Massachusetts and now lives in Durham, North Carolina. She writes about the people who go unnoticed in life –the woman standing in line at the bank, the mousy gal in the last cubicle, the PTA mom. She wants you to care about these women and think twice before ignoring the people you meet each day. When not writing, she is trying to raise two young women and a husband. Her next novel, How To Climb The Eiffel Tower, will be released in October 2014.

Author Spotlight & Excerpt With Roz Carter

The Covington Witches
Roz Carter

Synopsis

Imara Covington has always known that she comes from a family of strong women. Only after an unexpected journey to the quaint town of Edenton, North Carolina, do the family secrets begin to unravel. Once she thought of her family as her safety net and her home as a haven, but now Imara is forced to confront the long buried secrets that are at the center of her family's strength.

“No, no no no no not today.” Imara ran to the oven from the far end of the kitchen holding the phone against her ear.
“Well, I told her that I don’t want to go to church with her but she never listens to anything I say anyway.”
Imara nodded her head as though her cousin Sabrina could see her. “Uh huh,” she said, to let Sabrina know she was still paying attention.
Reaching the double oven, she pulled it open and was greeted by the aroma of crispy cheese on her baked ziti. “Shit,” she muttered under her breath, imagining the dramatics she would have to deal with if she tried to serve the dish at the event this afternoon.
“Sweetie, I’m going to have to call you back. I’ve got a little problem to take care of right now, okay?”
Sabrina chuckled. “Sweetie is my mom, but okay, I’ll let you go. Are you sure everything is okay? Anything on fire?” She laughed in the interim while waiting for Imara to hear what she actually said. It was amusing to think that Imara could have actually set anything on fire or created anything less than delicious in her catering kitchen. Everyone in the family relied on Imara for her beautiful cakes and pies during holidays, always beautifully yet simply, decorated with that extra little something in every bite.
The corner of Imara’s mouth turned up in a reasonable facsimile of a smile at her cousin’s quip. She massaged her left eyebrow with one hand while gesturing towards the large tray of ziti on the counter with the other. “No, nothing’s on fire, very funny. A little crispy around the edges maybe, but no flames. Still, I better go, I may have to whip up another tray of ziti for the Baker party tonight though.”
“Okay, but can we expect you at the house tomorrow for dinner?”
They both laughed, knowing what Imara’s answer would be.

“No, I’m going to pass, I have some reading I want to do tomorrow night.”
“Okay, but you are the only woman I know who makes a date with herself to read. Bye.”
“Bye.”

Imara placed the phone on the shelf below the stainless steel countertop and turned her attention to the ziti. Who had baked ziti in the middle of summer anyway? Ms. Baker loved ordering off menu, thinking with her stomach rather than her head, even when it meant serving her guests a heavy pasta dish in the heat of August.
“Huh, that’s funny, I thought it was more burnt than that,” she said aloud. The ziti that she thought was too browned and crispy around the edges when she’d removed it from the oven looked practically perfect now.
“Talking to yourself is the first sign.”

Her cousin Marla sashayed into the industrial kitchen, hanging her floppy tote bag on the hook by the door. Walking over to the sink to wash her hands, she glanced over at Imara, raising her right eyebrow.

“What’s wrong now? Did the crazy Ms. Baker call and change her mind? Are we supposed to have dinner for 40 now?”
“No, nothing like that. I thought I’d burnt the ziti, but its fine.”
“Of course it’s fine. When do you ever cook anything that isn’t fine?”
Shaking her head at her cousin, who she thought suffered from a severe case of perfectionism, Marla moved to the refrigerator to pull out some Parmesan.

“I don’t need Parmesan for this.” Imara said, looking up from the list of things she had to check off for the party.
“You may not need it, but I do; I’m starving!” Marla broke off a chunk from the block, haphazardly re-wrapped the larger block and placed it back in the refrigerator. Imara thought, I’ll re-wrap that when she leaves the kitchen; it’s going to dry out otherwise.

Walking towards the doorway, Marla slung her huge bag over her shoulder and said, “Chop, chop, time’s a ticking. Let’s get a move on, otherwise you’re going to be late. Ms. Baker would love to call me to get something off her bill because you were five minutes later than the agreed upon time.”

“I know,” she said. Imara found Ms. Baker extremely unpleasant to deal with but her company had events often, so she had to grin and bear her antics, even if it killed her.

Imara finished the inventory for the guys to begin loading up the van, and placed the clipboard next to the stack of glassware. She pulled off her apron and dropped it into the hamper that was located in the alcove by the door. Imara picked up her iPhone and walked out of the kitchen after taking one last look around to make sure she hadn’t forgotten anything. She was hungry but didn’t have time to eat anything now. Imara knew she’d have to grab something when she got upstairs otherwise she’d be hungry and angry or hangry as Marla called it, by the end of the evening. Oh, the Parmesan. Imara walked back to the refrigerator and pulled out the cheese, and carefully re-wrapped it. It smelled delicious but she wanted something crunchy, and crisp to nosh, something that hopefully would stave off the headache that was threatening to develop.

She walked to the office down the hall and leaned in. Imara was always struck by the contrast between the pristine kitchen, her domain, and the office that looked like a hurricane had hit it, which was Marla’s domain.
Marla sat behind a desk that had piles of papers, which were topped with books, which had various office supplies perched on top of them, all creating a precarious mountain that looked as if it were just waiting to topple at any moment. Leaning back in her chair, she looked up from her iPad as she heard Imara approach.

“I will never understand how you can work like this, it’s a mess. Actually, it’s worse than a mess, it looks like a lunatic asylum.”

“Uh huh, well you worry about you, I’ll do me. Now, get out of here and go change please.”

Once Imara left, Marla turned back to her iPad and the calendar for next week’s events. They had two dinner clients scheduled for Monday, one breakfast meeting on Tuesday and a full sit-down dinner with bartending and waitstaff scheduled for Friday. She knew she would be exhausted by Saturday, but the business was doing so well lately, who was she to complain? Her cousin was getting some repeat clients and word of mouth was spreading in the community. Their catering business was professionally run and the food was always generously portioned and delicious, so business was booming.
The electric and gas bills had come in the other day. Now, where were they? Marla knew that if she started moving things from one pile to the other she could have a mess on her hands, if everything started to slide. She wanted to get out of here and get home so as she looked out of the door of the office, to see if anyone was around, she mouthed a few words. If anyone had been looking her way, it would have appeared as if she was saying a little prayer, especially when she closed her eyes briefly and dipped her head. When she opened her eyes, on top of the pile of paper to her left she spied the two pieces of mail she’d been searching for all along. “Ah, so that’s where you were hiding,” she said as she took her seat. Sitting down, she brought up the calendar once again and entered the due dates for each of the bills, humming tunelessly to herself.

She noticed the time and picked up her phone to give her cousin Chike a call.
“Do you plan on getting here anytime soon or should I tell Ms. Baker that she should start screaming now?” Marla said as she heard the gruff “Hello,” more statement than question, on the other end of the line.
“Marla, leave me alone. I’m on my way now.”
“Fine. Bite my head off. I’m just trying to keep everything running smoothly around here.” Marla ended the call, rolling her eyes.

Marla heard the garage door opening in the back of the warehouse on the kitchen side and breathed a sigh of relief. Chike got on her last nerve but he was a good guy and worked hard. It couldn’t have been easy as the only male cousin in their generation. And any man that could put up with the crazy females in their family had to be a saint. Or something.

Interview With Carrigan Richards

Carrigan was born in Cullman, Alabama, but grew up in Birmingham, and moved to Atlanta at 18. She earned her BA in English at Kennesaw State University. For as long as she can remember, she was always making up stories and characters inside her head, sometimes using her dolls to act out the scenes.
When she's not writing (which is rare), she's spending time with her fiance, family, and friends, listening to music, playing with her sometimes psychotic puppy, or cheering on her Atlanta Braves.

Interview With Carrigan

JS: If you could only read one book for the rest of your life what would you read?

CR: The Great Gatsby.

JS:  If you Could rewrite one part of your book, what would you change?

CR: I'd probably rewrite some of James & Corinne's scenes from the past.

JS: Have you ever thought about doing a spinoff series?

CR: I have thought about it, but I won't.

JS: What was your favorite book as a child?

CR: Nancy Drew & The Sign of the Twisted Candles. I was a huge Nancy Drew fan.

JS What was the first book you remember reading as a child?

CR:  Either The Poky Little Puppy or Don the Mouse (or whatever that was called).

JS: Where do you get some of your ideas?

CR: From books, movies, music. Sometimes when I hear a song, a scene pops in my head.

JS: If your book could be made into a movie, Who would play what role?

CR: Dream cast! Corinne - Either Adelaide Kane or Emma Roberts; James - Zac Efron; David - Torrance Coombs; Lisa - This one is hard; Amos - Rupert Grint; Dr. Meisner - Judy Parfitt;

JS: Can your books be read as a stand alone?

CR: Yes.

JS: If you could step into a book world, what book would it be?

CR: Harry Potter!

JS:  If you could hang out with another author that you have never met, who would it be?

CR: John Green or J.K. Rowling
